Telling the time

This week we have been learning to tell the time to 1/4 to and 1/4 past the hour. We have played some fun games to help our learning. You can play these games here on our learning on line pages if you like. Don't forget to challenge yourself by picking half past and quarter to and past the hour. Can you beat your own time?

Some of us need to work on the games to 5 mins, because we have been learning that today.

Fire engine research!

The DaRTs team were out and about yesterday to check all the equipment on the large fire trucks. Fire fighters Clive and Mark brought the fire truck round so that we could inspect what was there.

Now that we have completed our thorough research, we need to make sure that our small fire trucks have the equipment they need. So it's back to our designs we go!

Fire engine research!

The team at DaRTS (Disaster and Rescue Transport Specialists) had a memo from the manager this week saying how some members of the public were very cross. They thought it wasn't very eco-friendly to keep sending the large fire engines to rescue cats from trees or put out shed fires or other small fires. The DaRTS team had a big decision to make - should they spend time designing small fire trucks, or should they keep creating the big ones that they were used to. After making some phone calls and finding out some facts, they decided it would be a good idea to do a bit more research about small fire trucks.

We looked at small fire trucks from places like Japan and America to see what shapes they were and what equipment they had on them.

It was a big decision, but the team decided that it would be much cheaper to send out  smaller fire trucks when big ones are not needed.

After all that research it was time to start designing our own small fire trucks.

Letters from London!

We were so excited this week when we received letters from London. We used Google Earth to zoom in to their school and have a look outside the school. We were a little bit envious of their lovely play equipment, so we have written letters this week to the Parish Council to make suggestions about some lovely play equipment for East Harling.

Our traffic bar graphs

We made bar graphs using the computers to show the results from our traffic surveys. We can show these to our new friends in London, to see how much traffic they get. When we looked on Google Earth, it looked a lot busier than East Harling!

Traffic surveys

In maths this morning some of us went out to the front of the school to find out about different types of transport that goes past and some of us went across the field to watch the traffic on Kenninghall Road.

Keeping an eye on Gallants Lane

We made tally charts and pictograms of what we found. There were big differences between the two roads. We want to ask the schools in London how much traffic they see. I wonder if it will be different?

Watching the traffic along Kenninghall road
We watched the traffic for 10 minutes, then completed pictograms of our surveys. We found out the difference between the totals from each road. Maybe you could try this where you live?

Here are our tally charts.

Using book creator

This afternoon we have learned how to use book creator to write 'All about me' profiles to send to St George's Primary School and St Joseph's Primary School in London.

We learned how to add photos and manipulate them, add text and change the colour and use different features of the app.

We were great at working together!

Some of us learned things all on our own - like how you can add your own drawings. Look at our super concentration!

Look out for our finished pages soon. We have added lots of lovely sentences! Our mini digital leaders were great at sorting out the iPads again - and helping others!

A bit of a mystery

Inside our treasure chest on Wednesday were clues about a person or an event. We looked at them one at a time to try and deduce who or what it could be. Can you guess?

There were some Rosary Beads. We thought it might be something to do with Jesus.

And a big book with lots of books inside it. We found out after a while that it was a King James  version of the Holy Bible. It was written around 400 years ago!

We still thought it was about Jesus or God, then another clue came out of the chest. It was a painting. We were great at guessing what was in the painting and we found out that it was also about 400 years old. We thought it might be something to do with a king.

The next thing that came out of the chest was this picture. Miss BB told us it was a very old lantern that would have been used in 1605 to help people see in very dark places, like cellars. We were very confused about the clues, until ...

we saw this picture! Miss BB said that we can't have real gunpowder in school!

We guessed that it was about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We learned how the Protestants and Catholics were always fighting and arguing.

Then we learned about what happened to Guy Fawkes. We sequenced our own stories and had some lovely conversations in our groups about bonfire night and what we had learned about Guy Fawkes.
