Backwoods Billy Baxter

Poor old Billy, he has come all the way from Australia to film some of our nocturnal wildlife, but hasn't managed to capture any on camera yet. What on Earth is he doing wrong?

He phoned WPIT for help, so the expert volunteers decided to give him a bit of advice - and they should know, they've been watching and protecting wildlife for a long while now. They have come up with some top tips to help Billy, which they will send to him in a video message shortly. They included:

  • Wearing camouflage clothing and staying awake in the night
  • Putting the cameras in the trees
  • Finding an owl box and putting the camera near that
  • Making sure the batteries are fully charged
  • Using waterproof cameras
  • Making sure you have switched the cameras on properly
  • Using infrared cameras

Look at for the tips soon!

Electricity

We blew Miss BB's socks off yesterday when she boosted class! We had been investigating electricity and seeing if we could make a buzzer buzz or a bulb light up.

Some of us were successful really quickly!

We worked very well together!

WPIT

Last week the WPIT were busy checking the barn owl cams that were put up by some of our team and volunteers from around the country.

We were very pleased to see eggs in some of the boxes and have been keeping an eye on the, during the week. Unfortunately, when we reviewed our barn owl nesting box information sheet, we realised it was a bit boring and too wordy. The volunteers have been working hard to create new ones to send out to farmers and to local owl supporters. They are looking great so far! More news coming soon!

Night time!

Last Friday afternoon we went into the learning pages on our class blog and learned all about nocturnal animals. We found out some very interesting things. Why not ask class 2 to show you at home?

Planting seeds

Today in English we were following instructions to plant some sunflower seeds.

We followed the instructions carefully, but thought they weren't brilliant for children to follow easily, so tomorrow we shall finish writing our own!

Critical friends

Yesterday afternoon we were learning how to improve our work, by listening carefully to the advice from a critical friend.

First of all we drew an owl in flight, by copying a picture on the board. This was our first draft.

Then we listened carefully to the advice from our critical friends about how to improve our drawings. Now we were ready to start our second drafts. We thought carefully about the advice we had been given.

Our second draft was much better, but could we improve it even further? We learned how writers, artists and many other people work hard to improve their pieces by valuing the practice of redrafting and accepting critique.

It worked! By not accepting that our first draft was our best work, we all learned that through perseverance, listening to advice and looking carefully at our own work we could all end up with a great piece of work on our 3rd draft! We will share some on the blog very soon.
